The National Education Association (NEA) battle against vouchers
The NEA, besides being a very large union, has become very active politically on a number of issues such as abortion, gay rights, and even Walmart. The NEA is a powerful organization that wields incredible power in our culture. Given our children they are able to indoctrinate and influence our future. An example of this is the NEA’s battle to limit or stop home schooling as well as private schools.First here are words from the NEA on private schooling:
“NEA believes in strengthening the nation’s public schools. So do 75 percent of the Americans surveyed in a recent Phi Delta Kappan poll. The Association also believes that parents should be free to choose, supplement or substitute education in privately supported, non-segregated, nonpublic schools — but at their own expense. Public funding should only be used to support public schools.NEA opposes any federal legislation, laws, or regulations that provide funds, goods, or services to sectarian schools that are not accountable to public authorities or bound by the law. According to a number of national studies, students attending many charter schools face less experienced teachers and get weaker instructional support. A number of charter schools have had serious legal problems, poor academic track records and problems staying open.”http://www.nea.org/topics/truth.html
Here is a break down on some of these ideas:The Association also believes that parents should be free to choose, supplement or substitute education in privately supported, non-segregated, nonpublic schools — but at their own expense: Of course the NEA is interested in keeping the money coming in. What amazes me is that so many people choose to pay out of pocket to educate their children while still having to pay taxes to support an education system they see as failing. What is criminal is that people must pay to for a failed system that the NEA helps guide.NEA opposes any federal legislation, laws, or regulations that provide funds, goods, or services to sectarian schools that are not accountable to public authorities: This is the craziest part of the argument. The NEA wants to control non-public education (private and home schooling) with a premise to maintain the same standards. Problem is it is the public system that should be forced to a higher standard since non-public schooling consistently turns out better educated people. Certainly the teachers may have more training but in the end that is not the issue. The issue is what is better for the kids. Parents are making really tough choices for the right reasons. To see their kids get a better education and development they are willing to sacrifice time and money. On the issue of vouchers I am a big supporter of the idea. I hate to see our tax money wasted on a system that is failing on all marks. The NEA throw millions of dollars at trying to defeat the idea but it is a fight for the NEA and not our children or our future.
