No More free lunch for China

Chinese soldiersIt has been interesting watching the headlines flying around with regard to global warming. Both China and Bush have made announcements about the need to address global warming but as is often the case China is given a pass. It is only words from a country that chooses to hide behind the label “Emerging Economy” with regard to the Kyoto treaty it signed. As the San Francisco Chronicle states:

China has resisted mandatory reductions in emissions, arguing that it is still a developing country and needs to balance environmental improvements with maintaining economic growth.

If I was China I would have signed Kyoto as well. I looked like a good guy for signing it but there was no expectation that I do anything!Back to the emerging country thing. I am fairly certain the Chinese do not think of themselves as emerging, yet the world, led by the left, wants to look the other way with regard to China. By virtually all standards this country should be viewed by the world as a powerful and repressive regime rather then an cute and cuddly emerging country that is just trying to take care of its people. Here is my short list of things you have that make you something more then emerging: 1) Advanced Nuclear weapons. 2) Massive industrial output. 3) Large and expanding military. 4) You are a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. 5) You have the ability to buy and hold debt of other nations, like the United States. As far as I am concerned there should be no more free lunch for China.
